Through words we name and interpret situations, through them the unknown becomes tangible, the ineffable imaginable. What can happen in the encounter between words and the materiality of the world? How can the meanings of words be affected by the verbs and qualities associated with materials?

RODA VIVA is an interactive work by Brazilian choreographer Gustavo Ciríaco, in collaboration with João Gonçalo Lopes and light designer Tomás Ribas, inspired by the spatial poetics of Portuguese choreographer Claudia Dias and the impact of her childhood experience of seeing Guernica, the famous manifesto work by Spanish painter Pablo Picasso against war and injustice.

At a time when the world seems to be repeating in various ways what was experienced in Guernica, it is even more pertinent to discuss and ethically re-examine the foundations that unite us in this world on the precipice. How can we position art as a critical point of view on the world, or rather, how can we invite people to become actively aware of the pressing issues of the moment through a performative device that mixes naming and representation? Between testimony and exhibition, scrutiny and spectacle, voyeurism and event, what words guide, build and bring us together?
